07th April, 2024 - The Vice President of The Gambia, His Excellency Mohammed BS Jallow, led a delegation to Rwanda to participate in the solemn ceremonies marking the 30th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
Joined by esteemed officials (including Secretary to Cabinet, Permanent Secretary of the Public Service Reforms and Policy Coordination, and Deputy Permanent Secretary, Admin and Finance of OVP), the delegation paid homage to the victims at the Kigali Genocide Memorial.
The commemoration, themed "Kwibuka 30 - Remember, Unite, and Renew," holds profound significance as it marks the tragic events that unfolded between April and July 1994. During this period of 100 days, nearly one million ethnic Tutsi and moderate Hutu lost their lives in a brutal genocide.
At the Kigali Genocide Memorial, dignitaries from across the globe, including His Excellency Mohammed BS Jallow, gathered to light the Flame of Remembrance and lay wreaths at the mass graves, honouring the memory of those who perished. The solemn act symbolized solidarity and remembrance for the victims of one of the darkest chapters in human history.
The Vice President's participation underlined The Gambia's commitment to commemorating the genocide and standing in solidarity with the people of Rwanda. Through such gestures of respect and unity, leaders reaffirm the importance of preventing such atrocities and promoting peace and reconciliation globally.
