His Excellency Mohammed B. S. Jallow, the Vice President of The Gambia , on Wednesday, 27 August
received the 13th Executive Council of the Law Students’ Association (LSA) of the University of The
Gambia (UTG) at his office in State House, Banjul.
The delegation, led by Ebrima Jarju, President of the LSA, outlined several concerns and requests aimed at strengthening both the academic and social welfare of law students. Among the issues raised were the need for internship opportunities, scholarship packages, sponsorship for their annual Law Week celebration, and support for the revival of the UTG Law Clinic, including the provision of essential legal kits.
Jarju explained that the courtesy visit also served to address pressing logistical challenges as the UTG
Law Faculty prepares to relocate to Faraba Bantang.
“One of our major concerns is transportation. We requested more buses for students before the
relocation takes effect, as this will ease the burden of commuting. We also raised the need for student
accommodation facilities in Faraba to address the difficulties many of us may face,” he said.
According to Jarju, the Vice President and his team responded positively to the requests, assuring the
delegation of government’s commitment to supporting the aspirations of the LSA. “The responses we
received were very encouraging. They assured us that measures are being taken to provide additional
buses and that student residences are being developed in Faraba Bantang to minimise the challenges we highlighted,” he added.
The Law Students’ Association, which operates under its own constitution, regards Law Week as one of its most significant annual events. It serves as a platform for engagement, advocacy, and professional development for young law students across the country.
The Vice President, in welcoming the delegation, commended the students for their proactive
engagement and reaffirmed government’s support towards strengthening higher education and
nurturing the next generation of Gambian legal professionals.
