On behalf of His Excellency President Adama Barrow, Vice President His Excellency Mohammed B.S. Jallow on 7th July 2026 officially inaugurated the new Accident and Emergency Unit at Bansang General Hospital, marking a significant milestone in the Government’s efforts to improve access to quality healthcare services across The Gambia.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Her Excellency the First Lady, Madam Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow, Chairperson of the Fatoumatta Bah Barrow Foundation (FABB); Cabinet Ministers; the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Seedy S.K. Njie; Governors; the Adviser to the Vice President; the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Vice President; traditional and religious leaders; health professionals; development partners; and members of the Bansang community and surrounding areas.

The occasion was marked by a festive atmosphere, with cultural performances by local artists and a large turnout of residents who gathered to witness the opening of a facility many described as long overdue. Community members expressed profound appreciation to the First Lady, the Fatoumatta Bah Barrow Foundation, and development partners whose collaboration made the project a reality.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of President Barrow, Vice President Jallow described the new Accident and Emergency Unit as more than just a physical structure.

“This facility is a reaffirmation of our commitment that every Gambian, regardless of where they live, deserves equal access to quality healthcare,” he said.

The Vice President noted that for many years, residents of the Central River Region have endured long journeys in search of emergency medical care. He said the new unit will significantly improve emergency response by bringing life-saving services closer to communities, reducing referrals to hospitals in the Greater Banjul Area, easing pressure on existing health facilities, and allowing patients to receive treatment closer to their families.

He commended the leadership of the First Lady and the Fatoumatta Bah Barrow Foundation for championing the initiative, while also expressing the Government’s profound appreciation to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other development partners for their invaluable support.

Describing the project as “a national promise,” Vice President Jallow said it reflects the Government’s determination to ensure that no Gambian is left behind in the country’s pursuit of universal health coverage.

He subsequently declared the Accident and Emergency Unit officially open for service on behalf of President Adama Barrow.

In her remarks, Her Excellency the First Lady, Madam Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow, Chairperson of the Fatoumatta Bah Barrow Foundation (FABB), expressed sincere gratitude to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for its generous partnership, noting that the collaboration has brought renewed hope to thousands of Gambian families.

She also thanked traditional and religious leaders, healthcare workers, and members of the community for their unwavering support throughout the planning and construction of the facility.

While celebrating the achievement, the First Lady stressed that more work remains to be done to improve healthcare infrastructure across the country.

She called on development partners, the private sector, charitable organisations, and Friends of The Gambia to continue supporting efforts to expand emergency healthcare services, strengthen maternal and child healthcare, and ensure equitable access to quality medical services for all Gambians.

“Every investment in health is an investment in our people, our future, and our nation’s development,” she stated, reaffirming the Fatoumatta Bah Barrow Foundation’s commitment to working alongside the Government to improve healthcare delivery, particularly for women, children, and vulnerable communities.

The First Lady concluded by expressing appreciation to everyone who contributed to the successful completion of the facility.

The newly inaugurated Accident and Emergency Unit is expected to significantly strengthen emergency healthcare delivery in the Central River Region, improving access to timely, life-saving medical services while advancing the Government’s commitment to building a more resilient and equitable healthcare system for all Gambians.
