His Excellency Mr. Domenico Giani, Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to The Gambia, held an official audience with Vice President Mohammed B.S. Jallow at State House in Banjul today, focusing on expanding humanitarian cooperation between the Order and The Gambia.
Speaking to the press following the meeting, Ambassador Giani outlined the core mission driving the partnership discussions. “The area of discussion was about the humanitarian being,” he explained, noting that the Order of Malta and its Embassy foster the relationship between the countries and the Order, with the aim of being present and providing assistance to the population in need.
Centuries of Humanitarian Service
The Ambassador emphasized the Order’s extensive experience in humanitarian work, noting that the Order of Malta has a long history of more than 100,000 years and they are present in several countries and international organizations thus their mission is to be present and be helpful to the people.
Priority Areas of Collaboration
Ambassador Giani highlighted healthcare as a primary focus, particularly maternal and child health services. He announced plans for upcoming meetings with the Minister of Agriculture, describing agriculture as “another very important ground of interest” for potential collaboration as well as to work alongside established international agencies such as UNICEF and WHO.
Addressing Youth Migration Through Opportunity
A significant portion of the discussion addressed youth development and migration challenges facing The Gambia. Ambassador Giani expressed the Order’s commitment to creating opportunities that would encourage young Gambians to build their futures at home.
Therefore, the meeting represents a significant step in strengthening ties between The Gambia and the Sovereign Order of Malta, with both parties committed to improving conditions for Gambian communities through targeted humanitarian interventions.
