His Excellency Mohammed B.S. Jallow, Vice President of the Republic of The Gambia, on Wednesday, 17 June received in audience the Ambassador of Guinea-Bissau to The Gambia, His Excellency Louis Camara De Barros, at his office at State House in Banjul, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations and accelerating the implementation of key agreements signed between the two neighbouring nations.
The meeting served as an important platform for diplomatic consultations and follow-up discussions on agreements reached during Vice President Jallow’s recent official visit to Guinea-Bissau, which culminated in the signing of several cooperation accords aimed at enhancing economic development, security collaboration, and regional integration.
Speaking to journalists after the audience, Ambassador De Barros underscored the historic and cultural bonds that unite The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau.
“It is always a great pleasure and honour to meet His Excellency the Vice President. Guinea-Bissau and The Gambia share a common heritage, a common history, and common people. These unique ties require us to remain in constant contact and consultation to strengthen our political and diplomatic relations,” Ambassador De Barros stated.
The ambassador noted that the purpose of his visit was to engage in consultations with Vice President Jallow and seek guidance on advancing cooperation between the two countries.
“Following the Vice President’s important visit to Bissau, our two countries signed significant agreements that touch on economic, security, and development matters. Now, our priority is to ensure effective follow-up and implementation of these instruments for the benefit of our peoples,” he said.
According to Ambassador De Barros, discussions also focused on the establishment of mechanisms necessary to operationalise the agreements, including the creation of a Joint Technical Committee tasked with coordinating implementation efforts.
“We discussed the necessity of putting in place the required structures to facilitate the implementation of the accords signed in Bissau, as well as those arising from the Joint Committee discussions. The focus now is on translating these commitments into tangible results,” he explained.
The ambassador further described the reception accorded to him by Vice President Jallow as warm and reflective of the enduring friendship between the two nations.
“His Excellency received me with great warmth, friendship, solidarity, and the spirit of complementarity that has always characterised the relations between Guinea-Bissau and The Gambia,” he remarked.
The meeting highlights the growing momentum in relations between Banjul and Bissau, as both governments continue to pursue closer cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including trade, security, development, and regional stability.
As neighbouring countries bound by history, culture, and geography, The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau remain committed to strengthening their partnership and fostering greater prosperity for their citizens through sustained dialogue and collaborative action.
